1 Month old Newborn Baby Photography Session | Salem, Oregon | LiveJoy Photography

As a Newborn Photographer, one of the most common questions I get asked from new clients is:

I have a One Month Old Baby, Am I too late to do Newborn Photos?

The short answer is NO. Absolutely not.

However, there are a few things we need to think about when you are considering a newborn session for your one month old baby or older newborn, and what happens when you wait to do your session.

Facts about One Month Old Newborn Photography

  1. Baby is much more awake and alert at one month old.

    • Most Newborn Sessions are typically done when baby is under 2 weeks old. This is when they are the sleepiest, and are still incredibly flexible. My Newborn Portfolio is mostly consisting of babies in that age range. An older one month old newborn does allow us to get beautiful wide awake images, but if you are hoping for more posed sleepy style of photos, older newborn can make those trickier to get. Doesn’t mean it’s not possible, but we may need to wait longer to get some sleepy images. Realistically you will most likely have some awake images in your final gallery. But these are often some of my favorites!

  2. Baby Acne starts to flare up around 1 Month old.

    • This is something to consider when you are looking to get images done. Baby’s hormones are trying to regulate after birth, and right around 3-5 weeks old is typically when baby acne happens.

  3. Baby is much bigger at a month old, and may not fit as well in certain props.

    • Babies grow incredibly fast, and your baby at one month old will be much larger then when they were born. They typically are eating good by then, and starting to chunk up a little bit as well! Baby rolls are so incredibly cute in pictures, but it does also mean that maybe a favorite prop you wanted to use, may not be an option anymore. Just something to think about!

Now, let’s talk about when it might be a better option to wait to do your Newborn photos! There are certain factors that we need to consider when deciding when to do your session. Here are some of the more common reasons that might mean we wait to do your session.

When Should I Wait to do my Baby’s Newborn Photos?

  1. If Your Baby Needs time in the NICU.

    • This is something that comes up regularly in Newborn Photography. I have clients all the time where baby needs some extra love and care in the NICU when they first arrive, and we always wait to do their session until baby is home safe and all is well.

  2. Mom Needs Extra Time to Heal.

    • Having a new baby is completely overwhelming, and some moms ask to wait a bit longer to do their newborn session. This is ALWAYS an option with me. I always am flexibility in my schedule to accommodate this request. Mom’s physical & and mental health is way more important to me than when we do your newborn session. I always tell clients I can get them gorgeous images no matter your newborns age.

  3. Parents didn’t realize they wanted newborn photos until after having baby.

    • Sometimes clients find themselves starting at their brand new beautiful baby and wishing they had booked a newborn session in advance. And this can mean needing to wait to fit into my schedule. While I cannot always accommodate last minute sessions, I do always try to keep at least one opening a month in my schedule for this exact reason. Once you meet your brand new beautiful baby, you are going to wish you had scheduled a session, and sometimes this might mean baby is older by the time I can fit you in my schedule.

  4. Illness or sickness in the family.

    • One of the best reasons to wait to do your Newborn Photography session is sickness or illness in your family. No one wants to get your picture taken when you are sick, but I also have a strict “no sickness” policy in my studio. I take very seriously the health and safety of all newborns that arrive here. If you or anyone in your family is sick we will wait to do your session.

How Does it Work to Schedule a Newborn Photoshoot?

  • Newborn Sessions are booked in advance, and they are scheduled tentatively by your due date. We do not schedule the actual session at this point, since we all know babies arrive on their own time.

  • The actual date of your session is not scheduled until after baby arrives. This is when I will send you some options for dates for your session. I start all my Newborn Photography Sessions at 10am, in my studio located in Salem, Oregon.

  • Clients typically book when they hit their 2nd trimester or around 20 weeks to ensure a spot in my schedule. Occasionally I am able to accommodate a last minute request, but it varies.
